The holidays are a time for good food, even better company and seriously great relaxation. Once the festive feast has been savoured, presents unwrapped, grandparents visited and Prosecco bottles emptied, Christmas isn’t necessarily over.

Whether with a partner, friend or sibling, jetting off somewhere exciting on Boxing Day is the perfect way to extend a jolly good time. It’s never too late to make a last minute booking, so let’s take a look at a handful of destination suggestions to whet the appetite.

Dramatic landscapes littered with lakes, castle ruins, famous cities, quaint villages and lively public houses: this is Scotland.

Those looking for a rural retreat can look into renting a luxurious cottage in the highlands. If with friends, you can stock up on local foods and whiskeys for a secluded party never to forget.

Alternatively, warm up by the fire with a loved one for a romantic getaway. Edinburgh and Glasgow are excellent options for visitors wanting to experience the country’s city life, with many famous hotels (the Balmoral and the Scotsman to name just two) providing the perfect base for the surrounding shopping, fine dining and unparalleled historical sightseeing.

If you’re more tempted by warmer climes, the Caribbean is calling you with year-round sunshine and pleasantly cool nights in the Christmas period. Barbados is just one island where you can completely immerse yourself in pure indulgence.

Prepare to drink lots of rum (not that you need an excuse – it is Boxing Day after all) and visit a rustic rum shack before settling down with a cocktail on the beach. For something a little more adventurous, you can go scuba diving in those turquoise waters or trek around its UNESCO World Heritage Site. Then proceed with your Christmas gorging a little less guiltily, sampling the local fresh seafood and grilled meats.

Christmas is the perfect time to show off your new snow gear on the slopes. Aside from apres-ski times with old friends, it’s also a good opportunity to burn off some of those Christmas calories and get into shape for the New Year.

Venture to European resorts where you will find festive charm as well as heavy snow fall. Val d’Isere is a classic choice for this time of year, but Zermatt is a lesser known resort with a very pretty village, St Anton has a thriving atmosphere and Val Thorens is one of the highest resorts in the Alps.
