Eye Makeup Basics: How To Do Winged Eyeliner For Different Eye Shapes

Being one of the must-have items for every beauty-savvy, eyeliner has the power to take your look to another level – whether you want your eyes lifted, more rounded, or smaller. In perfecting a winged eyeliner, some might find it a struggle to achieve symmetry. But more than that, picking the most flattering style for your eye shape does wonders.

Just like your brows, your eyes have different shapes and figuring what fits your feature is the key to enhancing your eye makeup. Go ahead and swoosh it like a pro with this ultimate guide on how to apply winged eyeliner based on your eye shape!

Your Ultimate How-to Guide in Achieving the Perfect Winged Eyeliner for Your Eye Shape

6 BASIC STEPS TO APPLYING WINGED EYELINER

1. READY THE ESSENTIALS

Skills can get you the perfect winged eyeliner, but it requires make-up tools and products to get you started. Here’s a quick rundown of the things that you need to pull out from your beauty pouch:

  • Eye Primer
  • Eyeliner
  • Concealer
  • Eyeliner Brush (if necessary)

2. PREP YOUR SKIN

Before applying any makeup, this is the step that you shouldn’t neglect. Be sure to thoroughly cleanse your face, exfoliate (if you must), tone, and moisturize. You can also apply eye cream to conceal wrinkles and blemishes.

3. BEGIN WITH THE BASE

How well you do your base makeup will affect the way your winged eyeliner will turn out. Here’s an expert-recommended tip: use eye primer! Aside from making your makeup last longer, it will also even out your skin for a flawless finish.

Don’t forget to apply and blend the concealer as well.

4. APPLY THE EYELINER

Draw a line just above your lashes. Start with small, thin strokes first, then build them up if you want your winged eyeliner thick.

5. WING YOUR EYELINER OUT

Aside from achieving symmetry, one of the biggest challenges in doing a winged eyeliner is finding the right angle. As a rule of thumb, refer to your lower lash line as a guide. From there, extend the line, wing it out, then slowly fill in a few strokes.

Note: For beginners, remember to take your time to perfect the winged eyeliner on each side. Otherwise, you’ll find yourself starting over again once something goes wrong!

6. DON’T FORGET THE FINISHING TOUCHES

Now that you’re done with the hardest, it’s time to complete the look with a few finishing touches. You can go on to accentuating your lashes with mascara and beautifying the under eye with eye shadow or smudged pencil eyeliner.

If you’re aiming for a more defined wing, putting highlighter underneath the flick does the trick!

Eyeliner on Fleek: How to Apply Winged Eyeliner Based on Your Eye Shape

1. ALMOND EYES

If you have oval-shaped eyes with pointed inner corners and overturned outer corners, it means you have almond eyes. Consider yourself lucky because this eye shape has good proportions, making it versatile enough to suit any eyeliner style.

HOW TO DO WINGED EYELINER FOR ALMOND EYES:

  • Focus on your lid space and thinly line from the inner corner all the way to the outer part.
  • Then start building up once you get to the outer third.
  • To create a wing-tip, extend the line from the outer corner connecting it with the existing line.

2. SMALL EYES

As the name suggests, small eyes appear tinier as compared to your other facial features. There’s also a lesser gap between your brow bone and eyelashes.

HOW TO DO WINGED EYELINER FOR SMALL EYES:

  • A double-winged eyeliner will create an illusion of bigger eyes.
  • Extend the line to make a tiny flick outward.
  • Do the same on your lower lash line.

3. MONOLID EYES

Common among Asians, monolid eyes have tiny eyelids and less-defined or non-visible creases. For this eye shape, you can either go for a subtle thin line or a dramatic eyeliner style with a smudgy effect.

HOW TO DO WINGED EYELINER FOR MONOLID EYES:

  • If you want to keep it as thin as possible, start from the middle (just on top of the pupil).
  • Then draw little strokes to the outer corner and a fine wing at the tip.
  • Afterwards, fill in from the inner part all the way to the middle.

NOTE: If you opt for a more dramatic effect, opt for a rough winged eyeliner and thick lines enough to cover the lid. Then smudge out the makeup to resemble a natural-looking crease.

4. ROUND EYES

This doll-like eye shape is characterized by a more prominent crease and white of the eyes.

HOW TO DO WINGED EYELINER FOR ROUND EYES:

  • To strike a perfect balance with the round shape, create an elongated wing that can widen the eyes.
  • Start filling two-thirds of the way from the outer corner extending to a horizontal flick with the same length as your brow tip.
  • For added drama, diffuse the upper and lower lash lines with a smudger.

5. HOODED EYES

One way to tell if you have hooded eye shape is when you have a less evident crease, especially with your eyes opened. It comes with a minimal lid space that is why you should opt for bolder eye makeup that will expand your eyes.

HOW TO DO WINGED EYELINER FOR HOODED EYES:

  • The goal is to have a thick flick on the outer corner.
  • Line from there and create a wing-tip from the lid’s hood.
  • Then fill in thin strokes along your waterline, keeping them extremely close to your lashes.

6. CLOSE-SET EYES

The easiest way to tell if you have close-set eyes is when you have a smaller gap between the inner corners of your eyes.

HOW TO DO WINGED EYELINER FOR CLOSE-SET EYES:

  • For this eye shape, make your eyes look wider.
  • Create thin strokes three-fourths from the outer corner.
  • Then draw a wing that joins the existing line and the elongated line to form a triangular shape.

TIP: Highlight the tear duct area with shimmer to make the eyes more open.

7. WIDE-SET EYES

Contrary to the close-set eyes, this shape has a wider space between the inner corners.

HOW TO DO WINGED EYELINER FOR WIDE-SET EYES:

  • Accentuate the inner corners of your eyes.
  • Maintain the same thickness towards the end.
  • Then create a tiny slightly triangular flick on the outer corner pointing upwards.

8. DOWNTURNED EYES

Downturned eye shape has outer corners that drop, which point to the direction of your cheekbones.

HOW TO DO WINGED EYELINER FOR DOWNTURNED EYES:

  • Draw thinner lines in the inner corner.
  • Then create a build-up towards the outer edges.
  • Complete it with a winged eyeliner that tilts towards your temple to give your eyes a quick lift.

Note: No need to accentuate the lower lash line as it will only compete with the details on top.

9. UPTURNED EYES

Unlike the downturned eyes, this shape has outer corners that are slightly tilted upwards. The lower lid is also more noticeable than the top.

HOW TO DO WINGED EYELINER FOR UPTURNED EYES:

  • Draw thin strokes on your upper and lower lash lines.
  • Eventually, get thicker on the outer corners of your lower lid.
  • Add a little wing and connect it with an extremely thin line under the eye.

TIP: The secret to achieving the perfect winged eyeliner is enhancing symmetry.

Applying a perfectly-winged eyeliner is not a game you can play by guess and by gosh. Sure, you can explore different looks but achieving flawless eye makeup requires mastery of your facial features, such as your eye shape. Always keep in mind what you want to accentuate so you can better decide the best eyeliner style that matches the formation of your eyes.
